How we measure your level
Your level is not a guess. The app watches five things as you learn, and your 1–10 level is the average of all five. Each line runs from red (just starting) through yellow (growing) to green (strong) — the arrow shows exactly where you are today. Your scores come from everything together: your conversations with your partner, your quizzes, the words you learn, the sentences you build, and your reading and writing.

Do a little every day and watch the number climb. Nothing is hidden — this is exactly what counts:
- Flashcards → Vocabulary goes up when you learn and practise a new word.

The road from 1 to 10
Every student starts at Level 1. There is no skipping — small steps, every day, all the way to fluent.

Your placement with Emma or James set your starting level. Every level below it is open to you as an optional Review deck. Every level above it unlocks when you pass its gate: vocabulary quizzes, building unseen sentences, a level-end conversation, and three written sentences — you only repeat the part you missed, never the whole level.
How your Vocabulary number stays honest: tapping the right answer is only the first step. With no typed or built evidence, Vocabulary can never go past 3.9 — and with no real conversation evidence, it can never go past 6.9. Stars never buy level increases. If a word slips at review, your tenths can dip a little — the app will tell you: “words slipping — review to win them back.”
Writing Studio — from one word to a portfolio
Writing grows in stages. You always see the purpose first, get two real strengths named, then one priority fix at a time — then you revise, and your draft, feedback and final version are saved together.
Picture Story (weekly): 3–4 connected photos → put them in order → write or dictate the story → get feedback → revise → read it aloud to Emma, who asks you one question about it.

Review deck — words come back before you forget them
Every word travels: Seen → Recognized (right on two different days) → Built (you typed it or built it into a sentence) → Used (you used it freely with Emma or James). Reviews return after 1, 3, 7, 16 and 35 days, a little harder each time — and they earn Stars at the same rate as new words. Miss one and it simply comes back sooner with an easier step; miss it twice and Zaban re-teaches it fresh. Tap a card to flip it.
Level checkpoint — are you ready for the next whole level?
A checkpoint samples the whole level, weighted toward your shakier words. Scoring 70% or more (within the last 30 days) is one part of stepping up a whole level. There is no hard fail: missed words simply return to your review deck sooner. Every question has an “I don't know” choice — guessing is never rewarded, and honesty costs you less than a wrong guess.
